Twenty 8″ x 8″ paintings!

Saturday, February 6th, 2016

DSC_0030I did these 8″ x 8″ inch panels for the Big 500, here in Portland in December. I like to use this event as a way to experiment with new subject matter, new techniques, new mediums or even new styles.

Music News!

My very first album cover! A 1993 live recording of Portland’s own Dead Moon – at the equally infamous Satyricon.

I’m thrilled to have the chance to be a part of this. I said it before, but I’ll say it again – this is my absolute dream job. I LOVE album covers; the size, the format. They completely shaped my adolescent world. I’m so happy that I got to do at least one in my life. … or maybe two?

LOVERGIRL

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Who says nothing is ever free? Some “lucky” artist will take home this beauty. I’ll get to take home one of theirs.

It’s a brilliant thing.

2011 PORTLAND VISUAL ART EXCHANGE
Exhibit dates: December 1-8, Mon-Fri 12-4pm
Public reception and Artist trade event: December 8, 5-8pm

Over 50 participating artists will exhibit one piece of original work in a week-long, invitational show at the Littman Gallery. The exhibit will culminate in a (semi) blind art trade and public reception. Although the event is open to the public, no work is for sale and only the participating artists go home with an original piece of art by another Portland artist.

Anyone interested in participating next year?

New Work In Progress

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

So once you have the initial sketch done for a painting, & you have it roughly painted in, this is as alive as the painting will ever be. Every brush stroke after, slowly takes the life out of it. Every dab of paint deadens it. Once you go down this road, you begin the slow arduous process of killing it, & then working your damnedest to resuscitate it.
Why not walk away in the beginning? ….because it seems too easy to leave that beautiful lively, expressive sketch. Even though it seems to say all that you need it to say. It seems perfect.
In your mind, there must be some struggle, or it doesn’t seem legitimate.
I guess the struggle could be the ability just to leave it alone.

Shanon Playford Shoe Painting

The Sky’s Ablaze
2nd attempt
gouache, ink & watercolour on paper
12” x 16” started on 17 finished on 18 Mar

From Was (not was)

My father used to take a drink or two when I was young
It was then hallucinations always dangled from his tongue
The sky’s ablaze with ladies’ legs he used to say
They’re kicking from the clouds
Shoes fall thru the morning haze & splat like eggs amongst the crowds
“Can you see them, son?” my father asked
“Now they’re dancing plain as day”….
